Hyperthyroidism: Medicines for Symptoms

Topic Overview

Other medicines that doctors may use to treat the symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:

  • Beta-blocker medicines. Examples are propranolol (such as Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), and metoprolol (Lopressor). These drugs control a fast heartbeat, tremors, sweating, and nervousness. Your doctor may prescribe one of them while you wait for antithyroid medicine or radioactive iodine treatment to start working.
  • Medicated eyedrops. You may use these if your eyes are irritated.
  • Corticosteroid medicines. These control any pain or swelling in the thyroid gland.
